"Haku? Hello!"

"Ah, hello..."

Miku Hatsune sat on the bed in her sweetly-decorated room, holding her phone to her ear. It was after school, the night before Haku's math test the next day. Earlier in the day, Akaito and Haku had worked on the review packet together in the library. They seemed to always be together lately, which led Miku into thinking something could just be blossoming between the two...

Haku was going to be too shy to admit it of course. Akaito was also going to be too shy to admit it, and possibly even more reluctant than Haku.

Therefore, Miku was calling Haku to ask her a few questions. She was hoping she wouldn't come off as invasive or snoopy, but it was her duty as Haku's personal Cupid to be progressive.

"So Haku-chan, about the test tomorrow." Miku kicked her legs hanging from her bedside as she spoke. "Are you feeling confident for it?"

"Mm-hm. Thanks to Akaito-san, I am. Also thanks to him, I'm caring more about my school performance knowing I can actually do it now. How about you, Miku?"

Miku, who was terrible at hiding her emotions, turned red in the cheeks while giggling silently. Good thing she happened to be on the phone! Or else...

"Yeah, um... gee, about that..." she stammered quickly. "Um, Haku-chan..."

Miku could feel the tension between them growing nervous when Haku stuttered.

"Y-yes? Um.."

"Haku, you and... Akaito-kun..." Miku let out a nervous laugh. This was going more awkward than she'd hoped. "So, what do you think of Akaito-kun, Haku?"

"Ah, he's really nice. I think you and him should be friends too, Miku!" Haku answered cheerfully.

"She sounds so cheerful talking about him..." Miku thought to herself.

"So, Haku-chan... I have a question about Akaito-kun. Do you think he's cool?"

"A-ah, yes..." Haku stammered. "He's a really helpful person, and he's also very mature. Do you want to be friends with him too, Miku?"

"Uhm, yeah... sure." Miku answered, now twirling a lock of her hair on her finger. "But I'm trying to ask you... Haku? Do you... think Akaito-kun likes you?"

Miku's grinned like the Cheshire cat and silent giggles bubbled out of her.

"Wha-?" Haku's voice on the other line sounded very surprised. "I... I don't know. It seems he likes being with me and helping me out a lot, and I am very grateful for it... Only I've never thought of it that way..."

Miku stopped giggling and grew very attentive as she heard a strange tone in Haku's voice. A very coy and bashful tone that sounded different from her usual stammering. She just knew Haku had to be turning red. This could be it! Maybe Haku just noticed her feelings!?

"Haku-chan, I think..." Miku moved her lips slowly. "I think maybe you should give it a try. You and Akaito."

There was silence. Miku waited eagerly for a response.

"Miku, I'm too scared to do that." Haku responded timidly. "I don't even know if I like Akaito-san myself. He probably doesn't like me either anyway. I'm sorry Miku, but I can't imagine us as anything more than friends."

Miku felt like she had just taken a punch in the gut. Haku was right and her answer sounded incredibly honest. Miku had just been rushing everything too fast.

"Haku..." Miku lowered her voice a little. "I'm sorry. I should've considered your feelings. Only I've just been thinking... if you had a boyfriend, you'd be happier. I just want to see you smile more."

"Really?" Haku's voice sounded forgiving.

Miku nodded, but said "yes" verbally when she realized the nod wouldn't bring itself over the phone.

"You're my friend, Haku-chan. Seeing you smile makes me happy."

"Miku, thank you..." Haku said quietly over the line. "It means a lot."

Knowing that Haku was most likely smiling right now, Miku grinned as well.

"Well, to be honest, I still partially think that maybe Akaito-kun is the one for you." Miku said, twirling her hair again. "But you can wait as long as you need to figure that out. I won't rush you. And if you decide that maybe he isn't the one for you, I'll be fine with that too."

Miku waited for Haku's response, and finally she spoke.

"I don't know. But if that is true, then it'll reveal itself with time."

"Alright. I'll give you time then." Miku said happily.

"Just... just don't go shipping us together, okay?" Ah goodness! Haku sounded so shy and cute!

"Oh no! I'm sorry Haku-chan, but I kind of already am! Bwahaha!" Miku couldn't hide her laughter anymore and exploded right into the phone.

"Ah, noooooo!" Haku shrieked comically.

--------------------------------------

After school that day, Haku walked into the library with a smile on her face. Akaito, as usual, was standing right in the corner they usually studied in.

"The test today was hard, but I feel like I did really good on it!" Haku said. "Thanks a bunch, again..."

"You don't have to thank me." Akaito said with a smile. "Besides, I found this on my binder yesterday."

Akaito took the sticky note from his bag and stuck it on Haku's nose with an odd grin.

Haku, who wasn't used to close contact, turned a small bit red.

"Akaito-san, you were supposed to keep the note! Well, I guess, it's just a sticky note..." Haku bashfully said.

"I know." Akaito said, "I was just teasing you a little."

Since when has Akaito ever teased? Haku started to think maybe Miku's theory was... no, that couldn't be true!

Haku pulled the sticky note off her nose and handed it back.

"Akaito-san, if you keep sticking it on things, the stickiness will wear out!"

Haku saw Akaito putting the sticky note back on the inside of his binder, aside a few doodles he did in class.

"You can drop the "-san" honorific, Yowane." Akaito said. "Just call me Akaito, without the san."

Calling a person by their first name with no honorific was a sign of familiarity. Haku wondered if she was truly close enough to Akaito just to call him by his name. Akaito didn't seem to like using honorifics either, calling Haku nothing but "Yowane". It was still her last name, as Akaito didn't seem the type to start calling someone by their first name all so quickly.

Even though it was Akaito's request, it still made Haku feel strange dropping the "-san".

"So, um... Akaito... what are you doing after school?" Haku asked.

Akaito looked down at the ground.

"Um, chorus practice with my brother." He said quietly.

Akaito was in chorus? Didn't high school only accept good singers into the school chorus? That would mean that Akaito sang well, right?

"Wow, Akaito, I didn't know you were in chorus..." Haku said, feeling impressed.

"Chorus isn't exactly my thing. My little brother and my parents begged me to join. My entire family is pretty musical and they always drag me into their shenanigans."

Haku never knew this about Akaito.

"So, um... um... can I see you in chorus rehearsal sometime?" Haku asked nervously.

Akaito gave a distant stare for a while before he said "Um... sure."

"Ah..." Haku started, holding her hands to her chest, "I also wanted to be in chorus, but was too shy to audition."

Haku's secret dreams of being a singer or voice actress flashed through her head again. She knew they were never going to come true. Never ever. Not with the way she was. She needed to be talented, confident and fascinating. Haku thought she was none of these.

"Well, the chorus instructor keeps saying something about needing more sopranos." Akaito suggested, "We have quite a few spots open, so maybe they'll let you in even if you audition in the middle of the semester."

"Oh, I... wasn't thinking of auditioning..." Haku's voice ran off. "I couldn't do it anyway."

All of Haku's dreams ran down the drain again. How was she going to be a vocalist or musician if she couldn't even audition for one person? Already sixteen years old, seventeen in several days, Haku felt that if she still couldn't do it now, she was never going to overcome her fears.

Akaito noticed how aloof and faded Haku's expression suddenly looked, staring down at her hands crossed over her own stomach.

"Yowane, hey." Akaito snapped. Haku lifted her face and looked at him with drooping, wistful eyes.

"If it's because you're nervous, you can practice in front of me." Akaito reassured. "I mean, that's just a suggestion. If you aren't comfortable with that either, you don't have to. But you should be building your confidence."

Haku's dull face promptly lit up as if a light shone inside her.

Practicing in front of Akaito would still be an intimidating thing for her, but the fact that he at least was supporting and trying to help gave her brand-new hope.

"Thank you a lot." Haku said.

Suddenly on her lips, was a smile. Akaito nodded in approval of her spirit.

"So, do you have any experience so far, musically?" He asked.

"Well, I have a pretty good ear, I'd say. Only I completely suck at reading music. I've taken piano classes for two years and I still suck, except not at composing. But this has nothing to do with singing now, does it?"

"So, you're musical already." Akaito said. "That's a good start."

Haku couldn't help but blush a little bit at the statement. Her, musical? Her?

"Now, here's what you do." Akaito said.

Haku looked at him with expanding eyes and an attentive face.

"Sing." Akaito said, sternly. "Do it right now."

Haku mentally backed away at the very statement.

"But I..." she stuttered.

"You want to perform for others, don't you?" Akaito said. "You need to get over that fear and be able to be prepared to perform, any time, no matter what stands in your way."

"I don't think I'm ready yet..." Haku stammered.

"You are ready." Akaito said in an unexpectedly direct voice.

Haku broke into a sweat.

"He's right though..." she thought. "I always have to think like it's now or never..."

So Haku focused her senses, stood up straight and tall, closed her eyes, opened them, swallowed, took a deep breath, opened her mouth, and...

Out came a tiny pathetic squeak. Shyness had blocked all her vocals from coming out.

Haku buried her head in her hands, beyond embarrassed. She could feel the red color pouring into her cheeks.

"Yowane..." Akaito clearly seemed disappointed. He glanced towards the clock in the library.

"Well, I'm letting you off the hook today. I'm going to be late for chorus practice."

Akaito slipped his backpack on and walked out the room with a cool disposition. He waved to Haku.

"See you later."

Haku waved back with a flimsy hand.

She sighed.

"But... just because I couldn't do it today doesn't mean I'll never be able to, right?" She compensated just so she wouldn't lose her spirit.

To her surprise, she got an unexpected answer...

"Right." A little voice inside Haku resonated. "Keep your head up."

In awe at the positive voice that had suddenly spoke inside her head, Haku nodded and looked straight forward. The path ahead of her suddenly seemed clearer.

Instead of walking with her head faced down, Haku decided to walk with it facing right ahead.
Still boring, but I promise next chapter (chapter 3) will be the best thing ever
Chapter 4 will have character development

Spoiler for chapter 3: Akaito is terrified of needles but he tries to hide it when he and Haku and Miku get their flu shots. Needless to say, he acts like a baby and shows more emotion than he ever usually does.
